Evelyn Lauder Dies at 75

With the nation awash with pink during Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, Evelyn Lauder certainly left her mark. Lauder, the daughter-in-law of the late cosmetics magnate Estée Lauder, died at her Manhattan home from complications of non-genetic ovarian cancer, according to reports. She was 75. It was Evelyn, along with her friend and former Self editor-in-chief Alexandra Penney, who created the pink ribbon campaign for breast cancer awareness in 1992. Shortly after marrying Leonard A. Lauder, the chairman emeritus of the Estée Lauder Companies, in 1959, Evelyn began working in the family business and went on to have a long career as an executive in the company. Lauder learned she had breast cancer in 1989, though she brought little attention to her own battle, instead focusing on women's health in general. She recently reflected on the campaign's origins, a time when she and her husband, Leonard, paid for the little bows handed out at department store makeup counters to remind shoppers about breast examinations. Evelyn also founded the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, which has raised more than $350 million.
Wilson Ramos Rescued After Being Kidnapped in Venezuela Kidnapped major league baseball player Wilson Ramos, a catcher for the Washington Nationals, was rescued in Venezuela Friday under heavy gunfire, and Saturday he shared details of his harrowing ordeal. Even as Venezuelan security forces raided the mountain hideaway where he was kept, Ramos – who was abducted by armed men Wednesday in his home country – said he knew he wasn't completely safe. "The truth is, at the moment they came to get me I was very nervous. There were many gunshots. ... Thanks to God, those guys did a tremendous job. I'm super grateful to them," Ramos told Venezuelan state TV Saturday. The catcher, 24, has played 113 games for the Nationals as a rookie in 2011. He is revered in Venezuela, where baseball fans waved placards demanding his release and players wore green armbands in solidarity.

'Immortals' tops weekend box office

Adam Sandler's gender-bending turn in "Jack and Jill" made $26 million at the weekend box office. Still, it was no match for "Immortals," the Henry Cavill-fronted action flick co-starring Mickey Rourke that raked in $32 million in ticket sales. The animated "Puss in Boots" came in third with $25.5 million, while Brett Ratner's all-star ensemble action-comedy "Tower Heist" was a distant fourth at $13.2 million. Leonardo DiCaprio's turn as J. Edgar Hoover in the Clint Eastwood-directed "J. Edgar," which also opened this weekend, brought in a respectable $11.5 million.

Bill O’Reilly’s ‘Killing Lincoln’ Book Riddled With Historical Inaccuracies
Bill Oreilly Killing Lincoln Inaccurate, Ford's Theater Bans Bill O'Reilly's Lincoln Book for Gross Factual Errors. Fox News Bill O'Reilly's latest book, "Killing Lincoln," has been judged so factually inaccurate by a reviewer that Ford's Theater is refusing to allow it to be sold there. So how badly did Bill O'Reilly mess up his history? A reviewer for Ford's Theater found the book to be "sloppy with the facts and slim in documentation." Translation? O'Reilly didn't do his research and offered no proof of any of his claims. Salon National Park Service bookstore at Ford’s Theatre pointed out these glaring inaccuracies:
  • Killing Lincoln refers several times to the Oval Office. Little problem: The Oval Office wasn’t built until 1909.
  • O’Reilly writes of Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee: “The two warriors will never meet again.” In fact, they did have a second meeting in 1865 to talk about prisoners of war.
  • According to the book, Ford’s Theatre “burned to the ground in 1863.” Sorry Bill, make that 1862.
  • In O’Reilly’s words, John Wilkes Booth used “a pen knife to carve a very small peephole” to observe Lincoln in his theater box. But one historical record says the hole was bored so guards could keep an eye on the president.

Kat Von D Reveals Cheating
Hell may have no fury like a woman scorned, but it ain't got nothing on a scorned woman with a large Facebook following. On Sunday, Kat Von D posted a jaw-dropping tell-all letter about her fickle, fizzled engagement to Jesse James. "Today I encountered the 19th girl to add to the list of people Jesse cheated on me with during this last year," wrote Von D. "I kept going back and forth in my mind as to what the best way would be for me to release and let go of any residual feelings remaining from that toxic relationship." She apparently decided that a soul-baring public confessional was just the ticket. Oh, and don't bother to chastise her with the whole, "Once a cheater, always a cheater," because she's figured that out for herself. "I know I deserve a big fat 'I told you so' from everyone," admits Kat, who called it quits with Jesse (yet again) in September, "and wish I didn't have to say, 'You all were more right than you'll ever know,' but you were." She adds that she's sick of being mistaken for the execrable Michelle "Not a Bombshell" McGee, who was the first woman to come forward with claims that she had an affair with James during his marriage to Sandra Bullock. "It would be nice to not be associated with her, but that's trivial in the grand scheme of things," sighs Kat, before adding, "I think it just made me sad today to imagine him still in that dark place, where seeking validation through the attention of women takes precedence over being a good father, a sincere friend, a better coworker, and a happy individual." Her reason for going public with Jesse's alleged two-timing is "about making peace with myself," she explains, "and forgiving myself for making some bad mistakes. I don't want to sink into the feelings of regret, or resentment. Because right now, for the first time in my life I have felt regret (for someone like me, who's never felt that before, this is hard to say out loud)." According to Von D, "Never have I felt so strong about True Love than I do today. I believe in Love more than anything else, and more than ever before." Concludes Kat, "Time is something you can never get back, and what we do with this very present moment is the most real thing we have. So if that's the lesson Jesse forced me to face and learn by all of this, than all I can say is Thank You."ows-rocawear.jpg

If you were hoping to score a Rocawear Occupy Wall Street t-shirt, you've missed your chance. The company -- owned by rap mogul Jay-Z -- has pulled the shirts from its online store in the wake of criticism about the profits. Apparently, 100 percent of the profits would have gone to Rocawear and Jay-Z, with no percentage being donated to the cause they were designed to promote. An individual who identifies himself only as "Grim" and is described as one of the leaders of the OWS movement: "Jay-Z, as talented as he is, has the political sensibility of a hood rat and is a scrotum. To attempt to profit off of the first important social moment of 50 years with an overpriced piece of cotton is an insult to the fight for economic civil rights known as #occupywallstreet." Jay-Z had been photographed earlier in the week at the OWS protests wearing one of the shirts, which read "Occupy All Streets."
