Veronica Mars Movie Online Fundraiser Surpasses $2 Million Goal In Less Than A Day

“Veronica Mars” fans just bought themselves a big-screen version of the cult favorite TV series. A crowd-sourcing campaign on the Kickstarter website to raise $2 million for the project hit its goal in less than a day. “Veronica Mars,” which starred Kristen Bell as a young sleuth, ended its three-season run in 2007. With Bell’s help, series creator Rob Thomas started the effort Wednesday to make a big-screen version. More than 33,000 contributors had pledged $2.1 million as of Wednesday evening, and the total was still growing. In his online pitch, Thomas promised, “The more money we raise, the cooler movie we can make.” The movie is the fastest project yet to reach $1 million on Kickstarter, hitting the mark in 4 hours, 24 minutes. It’s also the most-funded film or video project to date, according to a spokesman for the site. Previous top movie fundraisers are the planned “The Goon"  ($442,000) and “Charlie Kaufman’s Anomalisa” ($406,000), both animated. Thomas said “Veronica Mars” owner Warner Bros. has given the project its blessing, and Bell and other cast members are ready to begin production this summer for a 2014 release. A studio spokesman said a limited release, meaning it may not be on thousands of screens or in every city, is likely at this point. The fundraising campaign, which was confirmed by Thomas’ representative at United Talent Agency, ends April 12.
Kobe Bryant limped out of Philips Arena Wednesday night, a severely sprained ankle and revenge fresh on his mind. With the final seconds ticking off the clock of the Los Angeles Lakers' most recent loss, Bryant attempted a potential game-tying jumper, with Atlanta Hawks defender Dahntay Jones crowding his shooting space as the shot caromed off the rim. But the focus was not on the missed shot. It was back on the baseline, where Bryant had landed on Jones' foot and collapsed due to an awkwardly turned ankle. At that point, Atlanta's 95-92 win was all but a given; the remainder of the Lakers' up-and-down season hung in the balance. There's little question Bryant has carried the turbulent Lakers (34-32) back into the playoff picture, and the mere sight of the future Hall of Famer on the floor brought an immediate hush to the pro-L.A. crowd in Atlanta. Subsequent X-rays came back negative, but the Lakers' staff said that the All-Star shooting guard would be "out indefinitely." That seemed far from Bryant's mind once he finally emerged from the trainer's room, though he did acknowledge this is the worst ankle sprain of his career.

Twinkies buyer says cakes could return by summer

Hostess is moving ahead with plans to sell its Twinkies, and one of the new owners says the spongy cream-filled snacks could be back on shelves by summer. The bankrupt company had earlier picked a $410 million joint offer from Metropoulos & Co. and Apollo Global Management as the "stalking horse" bid to set the floor for an auction. In a document filed in U.S. bankruptcy court on Monday, however, Hostess Brands said the auction would not be held because no other qualified bids were submitted for the cakes, which include Ding Dongs and Ho Hos. In a statement, Metropoulos & Co. CEO and founder Dean Metropoulos said the firm was looking forward to having "America's favorite snacks back on the shelf by this summer."  Hostess, based in Irving, Texas, stopped making its cakes and breads in late November after it announced it was going out of business and closing its plants following years of financial struggles.

Lions land Reggie Bush

Reggie Bush isn’t dumb.He knows that if a defense has to pay so much attention to Calvin Johnson, it’s only natural there’s going to be more running room for him.“It’s a running back’s dream,” Bush said Wednesday, shortly after agreeing to a four-year, $16-million free-agent contract with the Detroit Lions. This was one of the worst-kept secrets of the free-agent season. For weeks, there had been growing speculation that Bush would be coming to Detroit. Nearly everyone agreed that he was exactly what the Lions’ offense needs right now to complement quarterback Matthew Stafford and Johnson, the game’s best receiver. Even Bush admitted that it all “almost seemed too perfect.” He said he was so excited, thinking about all the possibilities that being on the field with Johnson and Stafford might mean, that he slept for only two or three hours the night before. “It just made sense,” he said. “It felt right from the beginning. Everything made sense. They didn’t really have to sell me too much on it. They just pulled up one clip and I was already sold.”

Judge Judy sued by producer's ex-wife over Christofle china and flatware

Will Judge Judy Sheindlin end up on the other side of the bench? The TV judge is being sued by the ex-wife of Randy Douthit, a producer on her show. Patric Jones claims her now ex-husband sold Sheindlin a very expensive set of china and flatware at a mere fraction of the actual value.  She says Douthit sold Sheindlin the Christofle set for $50,000, while she values it at $514,421.14 She believes Judy knew the deal was made to get revenge on Jones, and wants the situation rectified. Jones is suing to either get the full amount she believes the set is worth, or to have it returned. She is also reportedly looking for punitive damages in the suit. Sheindlin says she hasn't seen any complaint from Jones, but doesn't believe she owes the woman any money. "If this 50-year-old woman would spend her time more productively at trying to find a job, instead of abusing the judicial system with frivolous lawsuits, we would all be a lot better off," she says.
Bachelorette Revealed After Bachelor Finale: Desiree Hartsock Is the One! Meet the new Bachelorette! She started out as one of 26 women vying for Sean Lowe's heart on The Bachelor, but now fan favorite Desiree Hartsock (known affectionately as Des) will be calling the shots this summer as the latest star of The Bachelorette. "I just can't even believe I'm here. With the support of everyone, it's just such a blessing," she said after Chris Harrison announced her on Monday's After the Final Rose special. "I could never have imagined signing up for The Bachelor and having this opportunity."  The bridal stylist, 26, caught Lowe's eye early on, and their first one-on-one date to an art gallery (where Sean pulled a prank!) seemed to solidify their connection. Then, things got a little rocky on the hometown date when Hartsock's brother accused Lowe of being a "playboy." During a rose ceremony he called "excruciating", Lowe sent Des packing that week, leaving her stunned and tearfully pleading, "Don't let me go." Now, the good-natured girl next door – who was a clear favorite at the Women Tell All special – will follow in the footsteps of previous Bachelorettes Trista Sutter, Emily Maynard, Ashley Hebert and many more in the hopes of finding her true love.

Kim Kardashian divorce: Moments were scripted for 'Keeping Up With the Kardashians'

Suddenly, Kris Humphries' claims of fraud in his divorce from Kim Kardashian don't sound so outlandish. During a deposition with "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" producer Russell Jay on February 4, it was revealed that at least two scenes on the show depicting Humphries in a negative light weren't quite real. Jay says moments in the couple's relationship were scripted, edited, or reshot, including Humphries' surprise proposal. Jay says Kim reshot the scene, because she didn't like the first take. Additionally, documents reveal that a moment where Kim confesses the problems in her marriage to her mother, Kris Jenner, was actually shot after she filed for divorce from Humphries.A different episode of the show depicted Kim getting angry with Kris when he throws a party in their hotel room, without her knowledge. Jay says Kardashian was actually in the hotel when the party happened, and was aware of the entire event. The two are due in court May 6 to begin their divorce trial. At that time, Kim will be seven months pregnant with her first child, with boyfriend Kanye West.
