Tom Cruise's Mom in Risky Business Dies at 71 Janet Carroll, who played Tom Cruise's oblivious mother in the movie Risky Business, died Tuesday at 71. The Chicago-born actress, who had a long career in movies and television, died in New York after a lengthy illness. Playing a mother unaware that her son was running a brothel in her own home while she was out of town, Carroll made her movie premiere in the 1983 film that launched Cruise to superstardom. Carroll went on to appear in 20 other films and dozens of TV shows including Murphy Brown, Married with Children and Melrose Place.

Elton John Hospitalized: Singer Admitted To Cedars-Sinai To Treat Respiratory Infection

Elton John was hospitalized Wednesday for a "serious" respiratory infection, the singer's rep said. John was admitted to Cedars-Sinai in Los Angeles at 6 a.m. Wednesday morning, but is reportedly doing better and recovering from the health scare. But doctors have advised the "Tiny Dancer" singer to cancel concerts for at least the next week. John was told that he needed "complete rest and antibiotic treatment to prevent damage." John first showed signs of poor health at a Las Vegas concert on May 20 and only worsened thereafter.  "All I can say to the fans is sorry I can't be with you," John said in a statement, regarding the canceled concert dates. "I hope to see you soon at this wonderful theatre at Caesars Palace."
Megan Fox The Megan Fox pregnancy doubters just went belly up. I reported a month ago, the Transformers hottie is pregnant with her and husband Brian Austin Green's first child. And while the couple hasn't commented on the good news, they could only keep things under wraps for so long.  Fox, 26, was spotted today's in L.A.'s Los Feliz neighborhood looking far bumpier than usual, hands resting on her tummy.
Chaka Khan on October 3, 2009 and on May 23, 2012Chaka Khan performs onstage at Nokia Theatre L.A. Live on May 23, 2012 in Los Angeles, California.  The real scene-stealer during American Idol's Wednesday finale? Legendary chanteuse Chaka Khan. Though she had an engagement and performances from A-listers like Rihanna, Jennifer Lopez and Aerosmith to compete with, the 59-year-old generated plenty of buzz of her own on the red carpet when she showed off a noticeably slimmer figure. Prior to heading inside the show, Khan flaunted her tiny waist in skinny-fit printed pants, and a black satin blouse. During her performance, the Queen of Funk took it up another notch, donning a brown, sequined catsuit to perform a medley of her hits, including "Ain't Nobody," "Through the Fire," and "I'm Every Woman."
Katherine Heigl steps out with mother Nancy and new daughter Adalaide on Wednesday in Beverly Hills, Calif. The actress, 33, and her husband, musician Josh Kelley, recently added the baby girl to their family through domestic adoption. “Her full name is Adalaide Marie Hope Kelley,” Heigl said recently. “Adalaide because of my great-grandmother, Marie after my middle name, and Hope because that is what the process became.” Adalaide joins big sister Naleigh, 3½.

Diana DeGarmo Ace Young Engagement Ring For his surprise proposal on American Idol Wednesday night, Ace Young selected an 18-karat yellow gold, platinum and diamond engagement ring to present to longtime girlfriend Diana DeGarmo. The David Webb sparkler, which features a 1.2-carat fancy yellow center stone, also boasts two side diamonds weighing .4 carats. Young helped to design the ring, after hearing DeGarmo drop a hint. “A month ago, she said, ‘Gold needs to come back,’” Young said after Wednesday’s finale. “I was like, ‘I agree,’ so mental note. Her favorite thing is a sunflower and she loves yellow, so one of our dear friends [helped me] put together a ring that has a yellow diamond, a gold band and two smaller diamonds on the side that are clear, so it’s like a sunflower.” The couple, who’ve been together for two years, met in the spring of 2010 when both signed on to costar in the Broadway revival of the musical Hair. DeGarmo appeared on Idol season three, while Young was on season five.

TV NEWS
If "X Factor" producers are looking for drama from new judges Britney Spears and Demi Lovato, it appears that they may have gotten exactly what they hoped for. The two judges square off during Thursday's (May 24) auditions in Austin, TX. It is here that Spears and Lovato couldn't have disagreed more over one of the entrants in the "Boys" category. And Spears has already walked off the set of the singing competition. The incident happened after a contestant's performance of Spears' song "Hold it Against Me" left much to be desired. She split and didn't immediately come back, letting four performers sing to the three remaining judges, Simon Cowell, L.A. Reid and Lovato.

Suits’ Vanessa Ray will guest-star in an upcoming episode of the ABC Family drama, playing Cece, a charming blonde who works as a stylist in a hip boutique.

Suds vet Richard Steinmetz (ex-Martin, Passions; ex-Jeff, Loving) is joining General Hospital as the son of a former character (any guesses?) who has a major story arc opposite Sonny Corinthos.

Hope JoAnna Garcia likes working with monkeys. The actress has been cast in the female lead role in NBC’s Animal Practice (taking over a part from Amy Huberman, who appeared in the show’s pilot). The comedy stars Justin Kirk as a veterinarian working for his former girlfriend (Garcia), who runs an animal hospital. Garcia was a regular on The CW’s Privileged and ABC’s Better With You, and had recent arcs on The CW’s Gossip Girl and USA’s Royal Pains.

Lifetime provoked a frenzy of response last month when it cast Lindsay Lohan as Elizabeth Taylor in its biopic Liz & Dick. In a move that probably won’t generate quite the same divided and clamorous reaction, the network has selected Grant Bowler to play Richard Burton, Oscar-nominated actor and famed lover of the Hollywood icon. Bowler is recognizable to True Blood fans as V-addicted werewolf Cooter and to Ugly Betty fans as Wilhelmina’s love interest.

Top Chef Masters Season 4 is slated to premiere Wednesday, July 25 at 10/9c on Bravo.

a game show with contestants linked from their homes, and newsmagazine The List, focusing on news and popular culture.
