Former champ Sanders killed
Corrie Sanders, the South African southpaw who knocked out Wladimir Klitschko in one of the great upsets in heavyweight boxing, has died after being shot by robbers at a restaurant during a family celebration. The former WBO and WBU champion was 46. Sanders was shot in the hand and stomach at a family member's 21st birthday party at the restaurant in Brits, in South Africa's North West province, on Saturday night, police said. He died in a hospital in the capital city of Pretoria in the early hours of Sunday morning. Police Brigadier Thulani Ngubane said three armed men entered the restaurant with the apparent intention to rob it and shot randomly, hitting Sanders. No other injuries were reported. The robbers took a cellphone and a bag from customers, Ngubane said. No arrests had been made but a murder investigation has been opened. Renowned for his hand speed, the 6-foot-4 Sanders was one of South Africa's most successful and popular fighters after a nearly 20-year professional career. He retired in 2008 with a 42-4 record, with 31 knockouts. But he was most remembered for the shocking second-round knockout of Klitschko in Germany in 2003 that earned him the WBO title and respect across the world as a wily, fast and clever fighter and powerful puncher. It is one of only three losses for the Ukrainian and current WBO champion. Sanders agreed to the fight on short notice and was a 40-1 underdog. The result was voted as the upset of the year by Ring Magazine. He then lost to Wladimir's older brother Vitali for the vacant WBC title the following year, Vitali's first fight for the title he still holds. Sanders had earlier relinquished his WBU crown in a seventh-round stoppage by Hasim Rahman after being ahead in their fight in 2000. Born in Pretoria, Sanders began his professional boxing career in 1989 with a first-round TKO of King Kong Dyubele. Eighteen of the fast-starting Sanders' 31 career knockouts came in the first round. Sanders hung up his gloves in 2008 after being knocked out by Osborne Machimana for the South African heavyweight title - in the first round.Sharon Stone Hospitalized in Italy
After attending a Fendi fashion show on Friday, actress Sharon Stone had a headache so painful she had to be hospitalized -- but luckily, she recovered in time to host a major AIDS research fundraiser on Saturday. In Italy for Milan fashion week, Stone was understandably concerned about the headaches, particularly given the fact that she suffered a potentially life-threatening brain aneurysm in 2001, characterized by severe headaches. "Thank you. I feel fine and I'm good and I've got a clean bill of health and I'm happy to be here," she said on Saturday at the fundraiser for American Foundation for AIDS Research. "I'm totally happy to be here for something so meaningful to me.""Wild horses couldn't keep her away," the Foundation said in a statement.
Green Day's Armstrong getting treatment
Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong is headed to treatment for substance abuse. Sunday's announcement by the band's rep comes after the 40-year-old frontman had a meltdown onstage at the iHeartRadio Music Festival in Las Vegas on Friday. As Green Day was wrapping up its performance during the all-star, two-day concert, Armstrong profanely complained that the band's time was being cut short. "One minute left, one minute (expletive) left. You're gonna give me (expletive) one minute? ... I'm not (expletive) Justin Bieber, you (expletives)!" he yelled (although Bieber was not part of the night's festivities). Armstrong smashed his guitar before leaving the stage. In a statement to The Associated Press, Green Day apologized "to those they offended at the iHeartRadio Festival" and said its set was not cut short by Clear Channel, the host of the two-day festival. The Grammy winning band also is canceling some of its promotional appearances. It is due to release the album "Uno" on Tuesday, the follow-up to "21st Century Breakdown," released three years ago. "Uno" is the first in a trilogy of albums; the second is to be out in November, and the last in January. The band is due to kick off a nationwide tour Nov. 26 in Seattle. Armstrong was hospitalized in early September in Bologna, Italy, for an undisclosed ailment, but recovered well enough to perform at the MTV Video Music Awards on Sept. 6. Since then, the band has made a series of performances, including a "Good Morning America" performance and a New York City concert for the launch of Nokia Music on Sept. 15. No interviews of the band were allowed that evening, but the band chatted with fans and Nokia and AT&T executives before performing for about two hours. It's unclear what Armstrong is receiving treatment for; in 2003, he was arrested for DUI, and has acknowledged in the past taking various drugs but has said he now eschews them. Green Day is one of rock's top acts and had huge success with its 2004 politically charged album "American Idiot," which went on to become a Broadway musical. Armstrong performed for a stretch in the musical.
Nineties nostalgia fans, rejoice: the Full House gang is back together! It's been 25 years since primetime viewers first got a glimpse at a different kind of all-American family on Full House, but on Saturday, Uncle Jesse, two-thirds of the Tanner trio and even Gibbler got together in L.A. The reunion brought together the patchwork San Francisco family, including Candace Cameron Bure (D.J. Tanner), 36, Bob Saget (Danny Tanner), 56, John Stamos (Jesse Katsopolis), 49, Jodie Sweetin (Stephanie Tanner), 30, Lori Loughlin (Becky Katsopolis), 48, Andrea Barber (Kimmy Gibbler), 36, Dave Coulier (Joey Gladstone), 53, and Scott Weinger (Steve Hale), 36. But it wasn't quite a full house: Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen (who shared the role of little Michelle Tanner) missed the festivities in honor of the ABC sitcom that began in 1987.
'End of Watch' and 'House at the End of the Street' tie with $13 million, ahead of 'Trouble with the Curve'; 'Dredd 3D' bombs
The box office blues continued during this sad September weekend, when four new releases entered theaters, yet none surpassed $13 million. In fact, September 2012 is proving to be one of the slowest months at the movies in a decade. Tied for first place was Open Road’s Jake Gyllenhaal/Michael Pena crime drama End of Watch, which earned an estimated $13.0 million out of 2,730 theaters, yielding a mild per-theater average of $4,762. The critically reviled horror film The House at the End of the Street finished in a dead heat with End of Watch, as it also earned an estimated $13.0 million, giving it a tepid per theater average of $4,227. Just outside the Top 5, Lionsgate’s Dredd 3D flopped with $6.3 million from 2,506 theaters, giving it an awful per theater average of $2,514. 1. End of Watch – $13.0 million
1. The House at the End of the Street – $13.0 million
3. Trouble with the Curve – $12.7 million
4. Finding Nemo – $9.4 million
5. Resident Evil: Retribution – $6.7 million
5. Dredd 3D – $6.3 million
7. The Master – $5.0 million
Three injured in Aurora theater shooting file lawsuit against Cinemark
Three people wounded in the shooting that killed 12 people at a Colorado theater have filed lawsuits alleging the exit door the gunman used to enter the building should have had an alarm. Two lawsuits were filed Friday in U.S. District Court on behalf of Denise Traynom, Brandon Axelrod and Joshua Nowlan. Their attorney, former Denver judge Christina Habas, declined to comment. A spokeswoman for Cinemark USA Inc. had no immediate comment. The lawsuits filed against the subsidiary of Cinemark Holdings Inc. are believed to be the first. They were filed the same day the company revealed plans to refurbish and reconfigure the theater and have it ready to open by the beginning of 2013. James Holmes, 24, is accused of killing 12 people and wounding 58 others during a special midnight showing of The Dark Knight Rises. Prosecutors allege the former University of Colorado, Denver, graduate student left the theater through a back exit, propped open the exit door and re-entered the theater to begin the shooting. The lawsuits claim Holmes was able to move his car into position after he left the theater through the back exit. In addition to failing to have alarmed exit doors, the lawsuits claim Cinemark was negligent in failing to hire extra security for the midnight showing or generally protect patrons who were sitting in a darkened theater. They also say Cinemark failed to help evacuate the theater even after the shooting ended. The lights were either off or very low even after the gunfire stopped, according to the lawsuit. Traynom was wounded in the buttocks, while Axelrod suffered bone injuries to his right knee and ankle. Nowlan’s right arm was nearly severed by a bullet, and he was also wounded in his left leg. Meanwhile, Aurora Mayor Steve Hogan was celebrating the announcement that Cinemark will reopen the theater. Cinemark President and CEO Tim Warner advised Hogan of the company’s intention by letter before the lawsuits were filed. In a statement, Hogan said there has been overwhelming support to reopen the theater. “We will always remember those who lost their lives and the many others impacted that day. While no one will ever forget that day, this is another step in the community’s healing,” Hogan said. In a letter to Cinemark, the mayor asked that special provisions be made for a victim and survivor visitation, memorials, and a change to the outside appearance of the building.LMFAO is breaking up, sort of
LMFAO‘s Redfoo said that he and his partner-slash-nephew Sky Blu are taking a bit of a break. Redfoo says he and Sky Blu — who is not only his bandmate but also blood relatie — are taking a break to focus on, um, whatever it is people named Redfoo and Sky Blu do in their spare time.“I feel like we’ve been doing this for so long, five or six years.” Redfoo said in the interview. “And we’re kind of like saying, well, let’s just do what’s natural and just kind of explore that, instead of, like, forcing it all the time.” He went on to say the two are going in ”different directions” creatively. “I think that we naturally just started hanging with two different sets of people, two different crowds, but we’re always family,” he said. “He’ll always be my nephew, I’ll always be his uncle.” Which is good, because we were beginning to worry there’d be an awkward Thanksgiving at Berry Gordy‘s house this year! He’s also going to record a song for the New England Patriots, saying that “they asked me to write a song for their season.” And what will Redfoo’s solo work sound like? “All the music that I’m going to make is always going to be LMFAO-ish … I love all the topics that we talk about,” he said. “I was really passionate about bringing party music to the world, so I will always be making some kind of party music.”Tonight's Premieres:ABC: Dancing with the Stars: All-Stars at 8p; Castle at 1001p
