Art Modell dies at 87
Former Baltimore Ravens owner Art Modell has died. He was 87. The team said Modell died of natural causes early Thursday at Johns Hopkins Hospital, where he had been admitted Wednesday. Modell was among the most important figures in the NFL as owner of the Cleveland Browns, which became the Ravens after he took the team to Baltimore in 1996 in a move that tarnished his reputation as one of the league's most innovative and influential owners. The Ravens won their lone Super Bowl in January 2001, less than a year after Modell sold a minority interest of the team to Steve Bisciotti. In April 2004. Bisciotti completed purchase of the franchise but left Modell a 1 percent share. During his four decades as an NFL owner, Modell helped negotiate the league's lucrative contracts with television networks, served as president of the NFL from 1967 to 1969, and chaired the negotiations for the first the collective bargaining agreement with the players in 1968. He also was the driving force behind the 1970 contract between the NFL and ABC to televise games on Monday night. At one time one of Cleveland's biggest civic leaders, Modell became a pariah in Ohio after he moved the team. Patricia, his wife of 42 years, passed away in 2011. Modell was beloved in Baltimore, and hoped one day the people of Cleveland would remember him for what he accomplished in the city. Long after the move, Modell pointed out that Cleveland ultimately got the new stadium he coveted, and that the expansion version of the Browns could draw on the history he helped crate. ''I think that part of my legacy is I left the colors, the name and the records in Cleveland,'' Modell said. ''The fans in Cleveland were loyal and supportive. They lived and died with me every Sunday for 35 years.''
Now this is friendship. Kellie Pickler appeared in a video clip on Good Morning America Wednesday sporting a very different look: a totally shaved head. The country starlet buzzed off her blonde locks on Tuesday in support of her best friend, Summer Holt Miller, 36, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in June and is starting chemotherapy treatments on Thursday. “Cancer does not discriminate,” Pickler said in a release. Added Miller, “If this compels even one person to change their mentality toward waiting until the age of 40 for their mammogram, then it will be worth it.” Miller — who has a family history of breast cancer — has always been vigilant about self-exams, and asked her doctor for a mammogram when she felt something might be wrong. After doctors did find a tumor, the mother of two underwent a double mastectomy, and was declared cancer-free in August (her chemotherapy treatments will help ensure the cancer doesn’t come back). Pickler called Tuesday a “life-changing day,” and Miller made the reasons for shaving her head clear on her Caring Bridge website. “I was told that it was mentally much easier to do it this way than to wake up with my hair on my pillow,” she wrote. “I’m really not that apprehensive about shaving my head. It is hair and it will grow back.”
The "Matrix" director lived as a man named Larry until 2002 and she only publicly confirmed her gender reassignment in July while promoting the new Tom Hanks film "Cloud Atlas."Wachowski, who divorced college sweetheart Thea Bloom in 2002 and went on to marry a second wife, has now revealed she suffered many sleepless nights as she contemplated telling her relatives about her sex change plans. She goes on to say, "For years, I couldn't even say the words transgendered or transsexual. When I began to admit it to myself, I knew I would eventually have to tell my parents and my brother and my sisters. This fact would inject such terror into me that I would not sleep for days." Wachowski insists she was overwhelmed by support from family members and now feels happy in her new life, adding, "I chose to change my exterior to bring it closer into alignment with my interior. ... My biggest fears were all about losing my family. Once they accepted me, everything else has been a piece of cake." However, Wachowski is determined to keep some details of her sex change private: "I know that many people are dying to know if I have a surgically constructed vagina or not, but I prefer to keep this information between my wife and me."
Judy Blume Diagnosed With Breast Cancer
Judy Blume has been diagnosed with breast cancer. The author of many popular young adult books, including Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret, Superfudge, Iggie's House and Blubber, revealed her diagnosis in a blog post on Wednesday. "We were supposed to leave for five weeks in Italy on July 29 – four of those weeks would be spent at an artists' colony housed in a castle in Umbria where I was hoping to finish my new book. A castle! Sound too good to be true? Uh huh," she writes. "A visit to the radiologist on June 12 for a routine ultrasound (dense breast tissue) led to a core biopsy," the post continues. Upon receiving the results from her biopsy, Blume, 74, tried to process her diagnosis. "Wait – me? There’s no breast cancer in my family (recent extensive genetic testing shows no genetic connection). I haven't eaten red meat in more than 30 years. I've never smoked, I exercise every day, forget alcohol – it's bad for my reflux – I've been the same weight my whole adult life. How is this possible? Well, guess what – it's possible." Six weeks after learning she had cancer, Blume underwent a mastectomy on July 30. "This surgery went well, one night in the hospital, very little pain," she writes. The author also discloses that 17 years ago, she had a hysterectomy after being diagnosed with cervical cancer but "caught it just in time." "No other treatment necessary. Another story for another time," she says.
Amanda Bynes's legal problems are getting worse. The actress, 26, has been charged with two counts of hit-and-run relating to alleged incidents in April and August, a spokesperson for the L.A. City Attorney's Office says. on April 10, the actress, driving a rental car, slammed into a vehicle on an L.A. freeway and fled the scene, according to the alleged victim. On Aug. 4, a different woman claimed Bynes, driving a BMW this time, rear-ended her and drove off without exchanging information, according to a report at the time. Bynes faces up to one year in jail if convicted on both of the misdemeanor counts. Her arraignment is scheduled at a Van Nuys, Calif., courthouse on Sept. 27. Her attorney did not immediately return a request for comment. This is her second round of charges. In June, Bynes was charged with driving under the influence after an April 6 arrest in West Hollywood. "I don't drink," she wrote at the time in a Tweet to the Barack Obama presidential campaign. "Please fire the cop who arrested me."
Bob Barker 'fine' with exclusion from 'Price' special
Bob Barker hosted "The Price Is Right" for 35 years, but he wasn't invited to participate in the game show's 40th anniversary special. The 88-year-old TV personality says the show's producers "chose to ignore me, which is fine." The 40th anniversary special episode of TV's longest-running game show aired Tuesday morning and featured returning contestants from the past four decades. Barker is shown in several clips but was not invited to appear on the program or attend the taping. "They haven't even offered me a DVD," Barker said in an interview Tuesday. Show producers had no comment. Barker, a longtime animal activist who advised his viewers each day to "Help control the pet population: Have your pets spayed or neutered," thinks he was omitted from the anniversary show "because I have been critical of them for giving away prizes that I consider inappropriate." He complained to producers for awarding tickets to Sea World and the Calgary Stampede as prizes. Both organizations "are notorious for animal abuse," Barker said. During his reign as host, Barker asked the show to stop giving away fur coats and leather jackets and they obliged. "We really became very careful about what we put on the show," he said. "Had I been the executive producer, they would not have even considered bringing me tickets to the Calgary Stampede of all things." Barker has donated millions of dollars to animal-rights causes since retiring from "The Price Is Right" in 2007. He was replaced by Drew Carey, who hosted Tuesday's anniversary episode. Barker's first appearance on "Price" in 1972 was among the clips included in the anniversary special. Had he been invited to attend, he said he would have repeated his show-closing refrain about spaying and neutering pets. "That's my message on any occasion and every occasion," he said. Barker added that he had planned to watch the special but missed it. BeyoncĂ© celebrated her 31st birthday Tuesday in true superstar fashion – on a yacht off the South of France. As the yacht sailed around the Mediterranean, Blue's doting dad carried her across the deck. Clad in a dress the color of her namesake, the baby seemed intrigued by her surroundings.
Evelyn Lozada: My Marriage to Chad Johnson Can't Be Repaired
Is Chad Johnson – formerly known as Chad Ochocinco– hoping to reconcile with his estranged wife Evelyn Lozada? After his arrest on Aug. 11 for allegedly head-butting Lozada, the former Miami Dolphins player recently showed off a new tattoo of Lozada's face on his leg. When a Twitter user mentioned the tattoo and Lozada's filing for a divorce, Johnson responded, "Divorce? Child please... that's my WIFE." To another user, he wrote, "I don't give a flying pretzel in skittle rainbow hell what she filed for." But Lozada is adamant that their relationship is over. "You can't repair this," Lozada said. "Not right now. You just can't." After the Aug. 11 incident, Lozada went to the hospital for stitches, and Johnson spent a night in jail for simple domestic battery. An upcoming reality show starring the couple, Ev and Ocho, was canceled by VH1, and his contract with the Dolphins was also scrapped. "I would like to apologize to everyone for the recent events that have occurred," he wrote on his website. "I would like to wish Evelyn well and will never say anything bad about her because I truly love her to death." And while Lozada admits that she'll "always have love" for her husband of 41 days, she can't see them working things out in the future. "This is something you should never tolerate," says Lozada, who hopes to inspire victims of domestic abuse to get help. "I don't care what the situation is – or who the man is."
The actor who played Pinky in two of the "Friday" movies claims he's been falsely accused of raping a woman in Louisiana last year. Clifton Powell -- who also appeared in "Rush Hour," "Ray" and "Menace II Society" -- has been sued by a woman using the pseudonym Kiyante Myers, who claims the actor raped her in a hotel room in August 2011. According to the suit, Myers claims she initially consented to sex with Powell ... but when it turned rough, she asked him to stop ... and he refused. Instead, she claims, Powell placed his hands over her face and raped her. Myers went to cops about the incident last year ... and an investigation was conducted. But cops didn't feel there was enough evidence to prove Powell committed a crime and they closed the case against the actor. Myers has now taken her claims to federal court in Louisiana, where she's seeking damages in excess of $75k. A rep for Clifton says "Mr. Powell absolutely denies these false accusations and plans on pursuing all legal remedies available to him against his accuser."
