Former major league pitcher Pascual Perez, who had a troubled 11-season career that included two suspensions for drug use, was killed at his home in the Dominican Republic in an apparent robbery, police said Thursday. Perez, who last played in the majors for the New York Yankees in 1991, was found with a severe head wound in a town west of the capital, Santo Domingo, and there was evidence at the scene to suggest that whoever killed him had been searching for money, said Joel Valdemiro, a prosecutor who is involved in the investigation. No one was in custody and authorities did not reveal whether they had any suspects. Police said there were several assailants and that the house in the town of Don Gregorio appeared to have been ransacked. "It's an act of criminality, unfortunately," Valdemiro said. Perez's brother Carlos, a former pitcher for the Dodgers, confirmed his death. Perez's ex-wife Maritza Montero found his body about 8:30 a.m. Thursday and investigators said he appeared to have been slain about eight hours earlier. The precise cause of death has not been determined but officials said Perez, who had suffered severe kidney problems in recent years, had a fractured skull from a blow to the head. Perez, 55, played 11 seasons of in the majors and compiled a lifetime record of 67-68 with the Braves, Pirates, Expos and Yankees. But he was in and out of trouble for much of his career. "We were shocked to hear the news of Pascual Perez' death earlier today," said Braves president John Schuerholz in a statement. "Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during the aftermath of this tragic event. Pascual left his mark with the Braves organization and will always be remembered fondly by Braves fans."

Disney buys Lucasfilm Ltd. for $4.05 billion

Walt Disney Co. agreed to buy George Lucas' Lucasfilm Ltd. for $4.05 billion, pressing Chief Executive Officer Robert Iger's $15 billion bet on creative franchises by adding "Star Wars" and "Indiana Jones." Lucas, 68, the sole owner, will get half in cash and the rest in stock, making him a major investor in the film, theme park and TV company, according to a statement yesterday from Burbank, Calif.-based Disney. The first of a new trilogy of "Star Wars" films will be released in 2015, Disney said. The deal furthers Iger's pursuit of marquee content in an era marked by technology changes, such as $8-a-month video streaming and free game downloads, that disrupted Hollywood's traditional revenue sources. Iger, who paid a combined $11.2 billion for Pixar and Marvel, said memorable characters will be valuable no matter what medium they appear in. The Lucas acquisition brings the "Star Wars" pictures, which have generated $4.54 billion in worldwide ticket sales -- second only to Warner Bros.' "Harry Potter," according to Box Office Mojo. The "Indiana Jones" films have collected $1.95 billion. 'Sustainable Franchise' "If Disney is really trying to focus on the tent-pole, event pictures, and given that this is something that has huge carryover value in the parks and merchandise business, it certainly makes sense," said Matthew Harrigan, an analyst at Wunderlich Securities in Denver. "This is just the paradigm of the sustainable Hollywood franchise." Disney fell 0.4 percent to $50.05 on Oct. 26, the last trading day before Hurricane Sandy forced markets to shut down. The stock has gained 34 percent this year. Lucas, who will be a creative consultant on "Star Wars" films, will receive about 40 million Disney shares, becoming the second-largest non-institutional shareholder with about 2.2 percent of the company, data compiled by Bloomberg show. The largest is the trust of late Apple Inc. co-founder Steve Jobs, who sold Pixar to Disney. Talks between Disney and Lucas began a year and a half ago. Iger, 61, is reinventing Disney's film business through acquisitions of popular animated and live-action characters. "Marvel's The Avengers," the first film from that acquisition to be marketed by Disney, is the top movie of the year worldwide, with $1.51 billion in ticket sales, according to Box Office Mojo. The picture, Disney's biggest ever, led to a 24 percent jump in profit in the quarter ended June 30. Theme Parks Iger is also using Pixar and Marvel characters as fodder for theme-park improvements, such as the Cars Land attraction that opened this year at the California Adventure park in Anaheim, California. Disney parks also feature "Star Tours" and "Indiana Jones" rides. Lucasfilm's consumer-products revenue this year will be comparable to the $215 million Marvel generated in 2009, when Disney acquired it, Rasulo said, suggesting 2012 sales of about $860 million for all of Lucasfilm. Disney seeks to expand "Star Wars" merchandise beyond toys and sees international markets, now 40 percent of consumer-product revenue, as a growth opportunity, he said. Hasbro Inc. which holds the main license for "Star Wars" toys, sells about $140 million a year in related products, according to Sean McGowan, an analyst at Needham & Co. in New York. A hit film in 2015 could triple that, he said. "The 'Star Wars' universe is immense," McGowan said in an e-mail. "And the franchise has the potential be the biggest ever."

Michael Nouri Arrested for Domestic Violence

Michael Nouri -- the famous character actor known for roles in "Flashdance" and "The Proposal" -- was arrested yesterday on suspicion of felony domestic violence. Law enforcement sources say police received a 911 call around 6:00 PM on Friday to a home in Beverly Hills. When cops arrived, they were told a fight between Nouri and his girlfriend had turned from her verbal to physical. According to sources, cops observed Nourit's girlfriend with visible marks and arrested Nouri on the spot. He was held on $50,000 bond and released around 1:00 AM this morning.

Dallas Buyers Club
Jennifer Garner is in talks to star in the true story drama "Dallas Buyers Club". It's unknown what role she'll play, but the key part of a cross-dresser has yet to be cast. Matthew McConaughey plays a man who was given six months to live after contracting AIDS in 1986, but lived another six years by illegally smuggling medicine into the U.S. and making sure a lot of other sufferers got them too.

The Last Nights

Clive Owen and Morgan Freeman are attached to star in the action adventure "The Last Knights Of AKO" at IF Entertainment. The story centers on a band of warriors who seek to avenge the loss of their master at the hands of a corrupt emperor. Kazuaki Kiriya will direct from a screenplay by Michael Konyves ("Barney’s Version"). Shooting aims to begin early November in the Czech Republic.

Ride Along
Tika Sumpter ("Sparkle"), Bryan Callen ("The Hangover") and Jay Pharoah ("Saturday Night Live") have joined the cast of Tim Story's action-comedy movie "Ride Along" at Universal. Kevin Hart plays a school security guard who must survive a nightmarish "ride along" with the cop brother (Ice Cube) of his fiancee (Sumpter) who disapproves of the marriage. Callen will play a wily undercover cop, Pharoah will play a street-smart informant.

The Expendables 3 & The Mechanic 2
Nu Media/Millennium Films posted a flyer at the current American Film Market with announcements and details of their projects. Two such projects on that slate though are high profile sequels. The first is "The Expendables 3", not a surprise considering the success of the first two films. The more unexpected one is a follow-up to the Jason Statham-led 2011 remake of "The Mechanic". That film was both panned by critics and fared poorly at the box-office.

So it's no wonder the Emmy-nominated chef is ready for a change. His new CNN and ABC shows debut next year. In the meantime, the last installment of "Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations" airs Monday, Nov. 5, on the Travel Channel.

 Cheers star George Wendt is hospitalized with chest pains and had to drop out of a production of The Odd Couple in Chicago. The actor "is getting medical attention and will eventually make a full recovery," Timothy Evans, executive director of the Northlight Theatre, says. Wendt, 64, who played beer-guzzling Norm Peterson on the popular sitcom, checked into the hospital on Sunday. He was to play Oscar Madison in the stage production starting Nov. 9. Wendt is a Chicago native and performed in the city's Second City comedy troupe.
 Evan Rachel Wood is a married woman! The actress, 25, tied the knot with actor Jamie Bell, 26, on Tuesday, a rep for Wood confirmed. "The bride wore a custom dress by Carolina Herrera," the rep says in a statement. "It was a small ceremony with close family and friends." Wood, rumored to be engaged to Bell since January, first dated him in 2005, after they both costarred in Green Day's "Wake Me Up When September Ends" music video. The pair got tattoos of each other's first initial. Since their first courtship, Wood went on to have a highly publicized romance with Marilyn Manson, to whom she was engaged in 2010, then reconnected with Bell.

 

Cee Lo Green accused of sexual assault

Cee Lo Green is maintaining his innocence after a Los Angeles woman filed a police report alleging that "The Voice" mentor and rapper assaulted her.  The unnamed woman filed a report that puts Green (real name: Thomas DeCarlo Callaway) at the center of a sexual battery investigation. Though details are scarce, police have visited an L.A. restaurant said to be connected to the case, and have interviewed several employees and the manager. No charges have been filed in the case, and it has not yet been referred to prosecutors.

  Chances are she hasn't been on the receiving end of an untoward forward pass, but Camilla Belle has apparently tackled a most eligible NFL bachelor. The  starlet, who previously dated onetime purity ring wearer Joe Jonas, is dating God-fearing New York Jets player Tim Tebow. Seems the twosome were spied cozying up on Tuesday night while bowling and hanging at a club in the footballer's hometown of Jacksonville, Fla. It's unclear how they met, although both posed on the red carpet last May at the Costume Institute Gala in New York (the Catholic-raised actress can even be seen in the background of the athlete's shot).

'Octomom' Nadya Suleman Goes into Rehab for Xanax Addiction

Nadya "Octomom" Suleman has entered rehab for prescription drug addiction, and her 14 children reportedly will remain with nannies for at least the next month. Suleman, 37, checked into the Chapman House Treatment Center last week because of "anxiety, exhaustion, and stress" linked to a Xanax addiction, her rep says. "Ms. Suleman has been taking Xanax that was prescribed by her doctor to deal with her anxiety but she felt she needed a treatment program to help with her recovery," her rep says "She will be in treatment for 28 days or more if needed."

Dez Bryant's charges won't be dropped

Domestic violence charges against Dallas Cowboys receiver Dez Bryant will not be dropped. The Dallas County District Attorney’s office will not drop the misdemeanor charge of Class A family violence, the report said, despite a request from Bryant’s mother, Angela Bryant, to drop the case against her son for allegedly assaulting her. Angela Bryant called police on July 16 and said her son grabbed her, tore her shirt and threw a weighted ball at her. An arrest affidavit said he repeatedly struck her across the face with his cap. Bryant surrendered to authorities shortly after the incident was reported. He could face up to a year in prison and a fine.

Irish band refuses to open for Chris Brown

Irish hip-hop trio The Original Rudeboys have snubbed an offer to open for R&B star Chris Brown in the U.K. because of his 2009 assault conviction. And now The Original Rudeboys have turned down the chance to support Brown at his upcoming show at the O2 Arena in their native Dublin on Dec. 3 because they fear the slot will make it seem they condone his bad behavior. Bandmate Sean Walsh said "Even though it's a huge opportunity to play in the O2 with a major hip-hop star and a substantial fee was offered, we are completely against Chris Brown's assault on Rihanna. ... In addition, with our latest single "Blue Eyes" being about domestic violence, it goes against everything we are about as a band and supporting Chris Brown would send out the wrong message to our fans."

The CW is planning to send Serena, Blair & Co. off with a two-hour series finale event on Monday, Dec. 17.  The night will kick off with a look back at the show’s six-year run (featuring clips and interviews with the cast and producers), followed immediately by the final episode, titled, “New York, I Love You XOXOX.”
In addition, viewers will be treated to an exclusive sneak peek at the CW’s upcoming Sex and the City prequel soap, The Carrie Diaries.

Anne Hathaway and Jeremy Renner are bringing their big-screen skills to Saturday Night Live this November. First up is the Dark Knight Rises star, who will host NBC’s late-night staple for a third time on Nov. 10. Songstress Rihanna is set to appear in the same installment, marking her fourth go-round as musical guest. Bourne Legacy‘s Renner, meanwhile, has been tapped to make his hosting debut on Nov. 17 alongside musical act Maroon 5.


While some New York-area television shows resumed filming today after Hurricane Sandy battered the east coast Monday, it could be a harder road to recovery for ABC’s 666 Park Avenue. The show’s set, which is located at Cine Magic Riverfront Studios in Brooklyn, overlooking the New York City skyline, suffered severe damages after water flooded the building Monday night. “I went to check them out on the night of the storm at 10 p.m. and they were under 6 feet of water — the entire complex,” says Peter Kapsalis, owner of Cine Magic Riverfront Studios. “It wasn’t in very good shape.” The water, which has since receded, did varied damage to sets, he adds, but some could possibly be salvaged. “The Daylight Studio, which carried some of the smaller sets and was a little closer to the water [was] completely demolished,” Kapsalis says. “The main sets stayed in place even with the water rushing in [but] everything is extensively damaged.”


Harvey Specter, Neal Caffrey and Dani Santino will soon be back to work. Suits will return for the back half of Season 2 on Thursday, Jan 17 at 10/9c, USA Network has announced. Meanwhile, White Collar launches the second half of Season 4 on Tuesday, Jan. 22 at 10 pm. The next day, Wednesday, Jan 23 at 10 pm, Necessary Roughness kicks off the conclusion of its sophomore season with five new episodes.


USA Network is dumping Common Law. The cable net officially confirmed the struggling freshman drama will not be returning for a second season. The series starred Michael Ealy and Warren Kole as detectives forced into couples’ therapy to save their partnership.


Style Network has renewed Jerseylicious for a 14-episode fifth season.


Perpetually busy onetime 7th Heaven pop Stephen Collins has lined up a new gig — on ABC’s perpetually juicy Scandal. Collins, who previously has recurred on Shonda Rhimes’ Private Practice (as Addison’s father aka “The Captain”) will guest-star as a reporter in an upcoming Season 2 episode.


Revolution has cast ER’s Lelan Orser and Sons of Anarchy‘s Patrick St. Espirit in two potentially recurring roles. St. Espirit joins as a leader in the rebellion against General Monroe, while Orser will portray a weapon-building scientist.
