New Headlines:
Ann Curry Begs NBC To Release Her From Her Contract
Ann Curry is begging NBC bosses to let her out of her contract so she can accept a high-profile anchor job at CNN. Curry is reportedly earmarked for Anderson Cooper's coveted 8pm slot at the rival TV station by her former Today show boss, Jeff Zucker, who will take over as president of CNN Worldwide in February. If she quits without the green light from NBC, a clause in her contract bans her from working for any other news outlet. 'Ann wants out of her contract, big time,' a source close to the situation told RadarOnline. 'She has formally asked her attorney to explore exit options from the network.' But the website claims NBC bosses are unwilling to release Curry without a fight. 'If Ann were to just quit, there is a non-compete clause, which would prohibit her from working for another news outlet for two years,' the insider said. Zucker, previously executive producer at the Today show and one-time head of NBC Universal, wants to put Curry in the prime-time 8pm slot currently occupied by Anderson Cooper, RadarOnline reported. Curry's lawyers are arguing that her dramatic demotion from Today in April was in fact a breach of her contract terms by NBC. 'Ann's lawyer feels that there is a very strong case to be made that NBC has breached terms of the deal because Curry was demoted from Today. Today is set to finish the year trailing its rival Good Morning America. Curry was dumped as co-anchor of the NBC morning show after Today lost its top spot, as bosses thought a fresh face may bring back viewers. Curry was pushed out of "Today" in June, a move that viewers apparently weren't too happy to see. Ratings for the morning show have slid since then, and "Today" has ceded the No. 1 spot in the morning-show race to ABC's "Good Morning America." Curry has popped up here and there on NBC News in the past few months, but her assignments have been inconsistent.
'The Hobbit' outdraws 'Django' and 'Les Mis' with $32.9 million
Despite the arrival of two holiday heavyweights, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey retained the top spot at the box office for the third weekend in a row. Warner Bros.’ $250 million fantasy prequel was held out of the top spot from Tuesday until Thursday by Les Miserables, but over the traditional weekend frame Hobbit dipped only 11 percent to bring in $32.9 million, and its domestic total now stands tall at $222.7 million. After 17 days, The Hobbit is performing well ahead of 2001′s The Fellowship of the Ring, which had earned $189.3 million at the same point in its run. In second place, Django Unchained galloped away with a terrific $30.7 million over the Friday-to-Sunday period, bringing its total to $64 million since its Christmas day debut. The Quentin Tarantino-directed Western, which The Weinstein Co. says cost $87 million to produce, has performed remarkably well for a controversial, R-rated film in a season often dominated by family-friendly/inspirational tales. After winning Christmas day and spending its first three days atop the box office, Les Miserables finished the weekend in third place with $28.0 million.
1. The Hobbit — $32.9 million
2. Django Unchained — $30.7 million
3. Les Miserables — $28.0 million
4. Parental Guidance — $14.8 million
5. Jack Reacher — $14.0 million
Photographer killed while shooting Justin Bieber's car
Police say a paparazzo was hit by a car and killed after taking photos of Justin Bieber’s Ferrari sports car in Los Angeles.Los Angeles police Officer James Stoughton says the man died at a hospital Tuesday evening. Stoughton says Bieber was not in the car at the time. Sgt. Rudy Lopez said that the pop star’s friend was driving the car when it was pulled over for a traffic stop. It was parked on a busy street when the photographer arrived. Police say the man was struck by a car as he returned to his own car. When the paparazzo was advised by California Highway Patrol officers to step back from the traffic stop, he was struck by an oncoming car while returning to his own car. Stoughton says no charges are expected against the motorist who hit the man.
Jay-Z, the Bullitts to score 'The Great Gatsby'
Jay-Z is confirmed to compose the score to "The Great Gatsby," alongside the Bullitts. Jeymes Samuel of the Bullitts took to Twitter on Sunday to share the news: "Jay-Z and myself have been working tirelessly on the score for the upcoming #CLASSIC The Great Gatsby! It is too DOPE for words!" Rumors of Jay-Z's participation with the film started swirling when the first trailer debuted online in May. Director Baz Luhrmann chose Jay-Z and Kanye West's "Watch the Throne" track "No Church in the Wild" as the music for the film's trailer. The film's soundtrack may include songs from Prince and Lady Gaga, according to Collider. The soundtrack's tracklist has yet to be confirmed. "The Great Gatsby" opens on May 10. Jay-Z took on a similar role earlier this year when curating the soundtrack to "NBA 2K13." As executive producer, he brought along a number of artists for the soundtrack, including Phoenix, Dirty Projectors, Daft Punk, Justice, Nas, Kanye West and more.Green Day To Resume Tour In 2013
The Grammy-winning punk band announced new tour dates Monday. The band canceled the rest of its 2012 club schedule and postponed the start of a 2013 arena tour after singer-guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong’s substance abuse problems emerged publicly in September when he had a profane meltdown on the stage of the iHeartRadio Music Festival in Las Vegas. The band’s rep announced later that Armstrong was headed to treatment for substance abuse. “I just want to thank you all for the love and support you’ve shown for the past few months,” Armstrong told fans in a statement Monday. “Believe me, it hasn’t gone unnoticed and I’m eternally grateful to have such an amazing set of friends and family. I’m getting better every day. So now, without further ado, the show must go on.” The tour is scheduled to begin March 28 at the Allstate Arena in the Chicago area. Tickets for postponed shows will be honored on the new dates, and refunds will be available for canceled shows. “We want to thank everyone for hanging in with us for the last few months,” the band said. “We are very excited to hit the road and see all of you again, though we regret having to cancel more shows.” The band released their most recent album, “Tre,” on Dec. 11, more than a month ahead of schedule.
Brooke Mueller Wins Case Against Rehab Facility
Brooke Mueller is starting the new year with a big wad of cash, courtesy of a settlement with The Canyons rehab facility over a breach of confidentiality. Brooke sued The Canyons after someone from the facility allegedly leaked private information about her while she was staying there, including her admissions documents -- which detailed the nature of her addiction. Sources familiar with the situation say the settlement is for somewhere around $250,000.
