Rodney King, the man at the center of the Los Angeles riots, was found dead Sunday morning. He was 47. Rialto, Calif. Police Sgt. Paul Stella says that King's fiancée called police at 5:25 a.m. to say that she'd found King dead at the bottom of their pool. Officers pulled him out and administered CPR, which was unsuccessful. King was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead at 6:11 a.m. Detectives are now on scene, conducting a drowning investigation, but there hasn't been an official ruling on cause of death. "I spoke with him about a week ago. He was really happy, upbeat and engaged," says Suzanne Wickham, director of publicity at Harper Collins, who published King's book, The Riot Within: My Journey from Rebellion to Redemption, in April. "We were talking about him doing college lectures. He'd already gotten an offer from one college and we were hoping to get more. He was really excited. He loved talking to kids." King's passing comes more than 20 years after he was beaten by L.A. police in 1991 following a high-speed chase. The incident, including startling images of King trying to crawl away from police, was caught on video, and the acquittal of the officers involved sparked the race riots that erupted in Los Angeles the following year. Thousands were injured and 53 people died throughout the riot, which caused about $1 billion in property damage and inspired a national dialogue about racially-motivated police brutality. "People, I just want to say, can we all get along?" King said on the third day of rioting after days of seclusion, according to CNN. "Can we get along?" King was awarded $3.8 million in a civil case, but was left with permanent brain damage. He was arrested last year for DUI but said in April that he was doing well and was no longer drinking "as much as I used to."

Cissy Writing Book on Daughter Whitney Houston
Whitney Houston Memoir – Cissy Houston has an agreement with HarperCollins for a memoir detailing facts about the gospel singer’s Grammy Award-winning daughter Whitney Houston from her drug use to her enormous talent. “When I lost my daughter Nippy (Whitney Houston’s nickname), the world lost one of the most beautiful voices and an extraordinarily beautiful and charitable woman,” Cissy Houston said in a statement released by HarperCollins. “In sharing our story in this book, I hope to give her fans something to treasure, the way we all treasured Whitney. We are still receiving thousands of letters each day from her fans, and I hope reading this book will provide a deeper understanding into my daughter’s true story.” While the financial terms have not been disclosed, some of the proceeds will be donated to the “I Will Always Love You” singer’s long-time church, New Hope Baptist Church, where her funeral was also held. Some terms about the book have been disclosed however. Cissy will write candidly about her daughter’s remarkable career and will touch her low points as well—her infamous drug problems and tumultuous marriage to singer Bobby Brown while reflecting her own grief. “She will tell the unabridged and unbelievable story of her daughter’s life as well as her own, addressing Whitney’s brightest and darkest moments while helping fans around the world understand the complexities of this extraordinary star who died much too soon,” the publisher announced. The now-untitled “unabridged” book will be released February 2013

NBA Star Tony Parker Hurt in Drake-Brown Brawl
Professional basketball star Tony Parker says he suffered a scratched retina on one of his eyes during a New York City nightclub brawl involving singer Chris Brown and members of hip-hop star Drake's entourage. The guard for the San Antonio Spurs of the National Basketball Association, wearing dark sunglasses, described the incident Friday in Paris during a news conference. He said he expects to be sidelined for about a week while the French team prepares for the Summer Olympics. Parker said he was wearing a "therapeutic" contact lens and had to go to an emergency room for treatment after arriving in Paris. Parker said: "I was with my friend Chris Brown and me and my friends took some punches, so I'll be missing the start of the French team because I can't do anything for a week except keep the lens in and then take drops." Police said Brown, his girlfriend and his bodyguard were among several people injured during the bottle-hurling fight early Thursday at W.i.P in SoHo. Parker said "they started throwing bottles everywhere. I don't know what happened. At first it was OK, but then it started getting worse and when the plane landed it was really hurting so I went straight to the ER." The Spurs declined comment.
'Madagascar 3' earns $35.5M, more than 'Rock of Ages' and 'That's My Boy' combined
A couple of high-profile openers couldn’t force the animals of Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted into their cages. The animated comedy topped the box office once again this weekend, while Rock of Ages and That’s My Boy delivered majorly disappointing debuts. Ridley Scott’s Alien prequel Prometheus finished in second place for its second weekend. Although many prognosticators expected Rock of Ages to vie for the number one spot this weekend, the hair-metal Broadway adaptation couldn’t convince audiences to join the mosh pit. Ages dropped like a rock, earning an abysmal $15.1 million in its debut — far less than comparative Broadway adaptations like Mamma Mia!, which began with $27.8 million in 2008 and Hairspray (also directed by Rock of Ages‘ helmer Adam Shankman), which started with $27.5 million in 2007. Rounding out the top five is Adam Sandler’s latest, That’s My Boy, which, despite the presence of Saturday Night Live favorite Andy Samberg, earned only $13 million over Father’s Day weekend. 1. Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted – $35.5 million
2. Prometheus – $20.2 million
3. Rock of Ages – $15.1 million
4. Snow White and the Huntsman – $13.8 million
4. That’s My Boy – $13.0 million
